What's the best way to build a sailboat – Sailboat buy a kit or timber from the start Build a Sailboat Plan?
When I in the line of wooden boat kits was surprised by what the prices were high – and the kits do not include the sails and rigging. What if I wanted to build a boat to pull behind my sailboat for me to anchor off shore, but have access to the shore without getting wet? All this from a guy who has over 20 years experience in shipbuilding.
In MS, a kit is the easy way – and you are stuck with the products they ship. What if they forget something and will not send all the pieces – you will not know unless you check that everything has been against the BOM. There's nothing more frustrating than buying a kit only to find missing pieces. That's why buying a plan and its list of material to buy my own stuff is something I prefer. It's my way of quality control. I know what I'm doing, because I'm buying all the parts myself!
The other thing is: why spend money that is not necessary? No need to impress anyone telling how much something costs. Actually, I prefer to do-it-yourself, and impress myself and keep my wife happy with what I am capable of. It gives me a secret pleasure knowing that I built myself something from scratch for much less that someone else can buy new or used, or built from a kit. I will keep the kits for models and toys.
Quality is the critical factor when I build for myself. It's my way of quality control! If there is anything wrong with what we have built, I can fix it myself and not have to get check out because someone else screwed! I like working with my hands and the good thing is that my mind clears and they never seem to have any such concerns when my hands are engaged in a project.
