Nissan Motor Co. is developing a diesel version of its Titan full-size pickup truck in 2009 for the United States to be equipped with engines built in local truck and engine maker Navistar International Corp., according to a report by industrial daily Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun Friday.
Japan's third largest manufacturer car, held 44 percent by Renault SA, currently offers no diesel vehicles in the United States, where fuel-efficient propulsion system is mainly used in commercial vehicles including large trucks.
A spokeswoman at Nissan said the parent company in future product plans.
In May, Nissan sold Titans 4899, down 18 percent from last year's figures. So far this year, sales are 15 percent to 28,668 units.
The Nissan Titan first and only full-size pick-up, was launched by the automaker in 2004 hoping to enter the lucrative segment dominated by the United States. But sales have failed to live up to expectations. In April, Nissan Titan model year 2008 was released.
The U.S. market collection has always been and remains dominated by the Ford Motor Co. 's F-Series and General Motors Corp.' s (also creator of the top-line GMC Brake) Chevy Silverado, the two best Vehicle sales in the largest automobile market in the world.
Competition also has become more strict with Toyota Motor Corp. 's introduction remodeled its Tundra – Japanese automaker, which was hailed as its most important product to date. Toyota has also hinted that eventually provide a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the Tundra.
International Truck and Engine Corporation, Navistar main operating company and the exclusive supplier of engines Ford Super Duty diesel pickup trucks, Nissan will supply diesel V8 engines, the Nikkan Kogyo said.
The Titan is powered by a 5.6 liter engine V8 petrol.
Nissan is launching a diesel version of its Maxima sedan in the United States in 2010 with engines produced by Renault.
