How can you date a compass?

My grandfather gave me his great grandfather in his pocket compass, brass and simply has "done british "in it. I know it is at least 160 years, but is there any particular way, so far? no marks, but I know it is solid brass with a line of paper in its original box of brown paper if it helps! thanks! i want an age! – Is it possible to go out with a compass? at least know where goes!
